‘Saving Smiles’ Oral Health School Pack |
DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND: |
The ‘Saving Smiles’ Oral Health Project was set up as a response to data produced by the Primary Care Trust (PCT) showing the poor levels of oral health of pupils attending several Leigh Park primary schools. The materials were developed through a partnership between the PCT Oral Health Educator and the CIP Extended Services Co-ordinator and piloted in Sharps Copse Primary School, in West Leigh. The pilot involved 150 children in Year R and Key Stage 1 brushing their teeth during the school day with high percentile fluoride toothpaste. The initial responses and outcomes have been extremely positive and the project has raised the profile of dental care with the children, parents and families. The project material is now being rolled out to the rest of the primary age children in the CIP and will be fully in place by January 2010. Following a great deal of interest from outside the CIP the resource material is being made available to other schools to implement similar projects in their own settings. |
